Description

In this lesson students practise vocabulary about jobs and years through listening and pictures then they practise years in both controlled and free practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of jobs and years in the context of famous people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of years
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about birth and death years

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show a famous singer who passed away two days ago (Harun Kolçak) and elicit his job. After this I will reflect Atatürk's picture to elicit leader, Van Gogh for painter use body language mime painting, Elif Şafak with a book for writer, Show the book and ask "what is this? She wrote the book, She is a writer" I will drill the vocabulary singer, leader, writer and painter.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss match the pictures with their jobs using cut outs. Show the pictures and the words and tell ss to match them in pairs. ICQ: Are you working alone or in pairs? Before FB order of the pictures is important so ask ss put them in order and demonstrate this and don't forget to monitor and check because if the order is wrong they can't check their answers. For FB ss listen recording 2.56 and check their answers. For clear instruction before recording "Listen to the recording. Put ticks for your true answers."

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T chests HO3 and demonstrates to fold the paper. Ss listen the recording 2.57 (32 sc) and listen some years and find out who the person is. Ss do the activity alone ask ICQ alone or in pair? Before starting the activity t demonstrates the activity by asking 1869 - 1948 (Mahatma Gandhi) and 1452 - 1519 (Leonardo da Vinci). ICQ: Are we writing names or numbers? Can I write Atatürk?" Ss check their answers and T writes 1,2,3, and 4 for these people and ask ss write their answers for FB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss listen recording 2.58 (49 sc) first they listen just first three. Then T asks CCQs for dates "which number did you hear?" "do we divide (divide the number on the board) or read it as a whole (underline the number on the board)? Are they just numbers or something different? What is this year?" and ss listen to the audio and they say the years in pairs. T monitors them if needed gives FB.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows Harun Kolçak's picture again and elicits "die". T says Harun Kolçak was born in 1955 he was 62 and two days ago elicits from the students die, if they don't know the word teacher tells the word "die" directly. T tells "I was born in 1986" T drills was born, die and nominates Erdem and Şeyda and asks "When were you born?" tell ss in pairs when they were born. Teacher nominates 2 or 3 ss for FB and then teacher introduces the activity 2c by demonstrating T says "She was born in 1904. Who is she? He died in 1910. Who is he?" Make ss in pairs A and B. First As ask the question and then Bs. Before Ss start the activity make one pair demonstrates too.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T regroups the ss, make half of the class A and the other half B, Tasks ICQ: "Who are As? they will change their seats to be A and B together. Pre teach some vocab unless they will have difficulty. Ask ss "where are you from? Then deeper where in ___ (the city they told) T writes the first letter on the board and waits for the answer. If no one answers T say village, T shows her wedding ring to elicit "marry". Ss read 7 sentences from exercise 3a and match with the people in pairs. Instruction: "Read the sentence", T chests the HO and shows the sentence, then "write Frida Kahlo, Gandhi, Tolstoy here" ICQ: Are we writing or speaking? What are we writing names or years? Can we write Atatürk? They check their answers with other pairs. T gives the answer key to students.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T writes some years (1986, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2017) on WB, elicits from the ss what may happen in these years. T gives 2 minutes to ss to write some important years like in the example and they talk to their friends what happened at that time. Some ss talk about the important dates of his/ her friend's life for FB.
