Main Aims

  • To practice vocabulary related to stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about stories (fluency)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students work in groups and match pictures to story categories.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

To demo, the teacher asks a couple of students what type of stories they prefer. The students then, decide, in groups, which types of stories they prefer. They have to agree on a top 3

Highlighting (12-14 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students look at sentences that describe stories. They decide which are positive or negative, or either. They then match these descriptions to the story categories.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher monitors to check the ss' understanding of the descriptions. He/she asks CCQs to the whole class, and drills examples.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To check if the students can use the descriptions accurately

The ss work individually to complete a conversation using vocabulary that they have learned. They then check their answers in pairs.

Free Practice (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to use the target language freely

The teacher tells a story and lets students know that they're expected to think of what category it belongs to, what kind of plot it follows, and what type of characters it centers around. They also think of the type of ending etc. After listening, they discuss their deductions in groups.
