Description

In this lesson, students practice listening skills through a listening context about holidays. First, they will look at some photos and talk about the places and they will match some vocabulary before listening. Students will focus on where people did in these places for gist listening. Then they listen the text for detailed information. In the post listening stage they speak about places.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of what they did on holiday
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of words for holiday activities in the context of places

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students see the pictures on the board. They talk about where they want to go.

Pre-Listening (Vocabulary) (15-17 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher reflects some pictures on board and elicits from students some of the possibly unknown words such as sightseeing, skiing and art galleries, expensive, business, trip and relaxed. CCQs for words: Sightseeing: "Did you go to Topkapı Palace?" "Did you take photos?" "Is it a famous place?" "Did you go on holiday?" "Did you go sightseeing on your holiday, where? Skiing: In winter, we can go ___, especially in Uludağ. Art Galleries: "Do you like paintings, like Mona Lisa?" "Do you go to see the paintings?" Expensive: "Is a Cooper cheap?" Business: When I buy plane ticket, I buy my ticket from first class or ___ class and I travel for my job. I sell and buy things. Trip: A short travel. I go somewhere but come back in a few days. After eliciting the vocabulary, T demonstrates students will match the expressions with the pictures.

While-Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

T informs students listen four people and they went to these places. First, they will talk what these people can do in these places in pairs. Then T hands out the gist and detailed question HO. Ss fold and focus on only the gist question which they already talk in their groups. When they finish they peer check and nominate each other for the FB

While-Listening #2 (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging listening for specific information task

T informs ss unfold the paper. Ss check the questions and listen for the places. They might listen more than once. When they finish, they check their answers first with their friends and come to board to write the answers. Don't forget asking ICQ "Are you working alone or with your friend?"

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T regroups the students (counting 1-2 and gathering 1s 2s together) reflect the photos of places and teacher shows students As and Bs. Student A thinks a place from the photos and tells B what she/he did there without telling the place. B will guess where A went. Then they swap roles. ICQ:Who can choose the place, A or B? (A) Can you choose Britain? (Yes) Can you choose Germany? (No) Who will tell the place? (B) Can A tell the place?(No)
