In this lesson, ss practice reading for specific information in the context of a biography.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Lucian Freud in the context of biography

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice controlled speaking


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Ss look at pic1: "Do you know this man?"(yes/ Dhafer L Abidine) "Does everyone in Tunisia know him?"(yes) "What's his job?"(actor)"Do you like this actor?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Ss look at pic2: " what is that in his hand?"(prize) "Why did he get it?" (good actor/ artist) - "Do you think he had other jobs in the past?"(yes) , "can you guess what jobs he had?"T tells ss to discuss this in pairs. -T displays pictures of different jobs: " Do you see any of the jobs you talked about?" (ss say which ones) - T elicits meaning of: sailor/painter/ psychoanalyst (Drill words) then drill words in sentence: "psychoanalyst" "a psychoanalyst" " He's a psychoanalyst" (do this with sailor and painter as well) - Focus on painter, ss look at pic of Lucian Freud, "what do you see?" (painter/ picture, man) "What is in the picture?" elicit "portrait" + Drill ( as done with previous words) - Focus on the painter, "Do you know any famous painters?" -T introduces Lucian Freud

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Ss look at a closer picture of Freud. " You are going to read about Freud." - T explains to ss that they have only 90 seconds to read the text and say what it is about.(ind) - T instructs ss to Check in pairs ( ICQ) - T gives answer feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-SS read the text again then look for answers to question in 2) in the handout. T explains that ss will read slower and carefully now because they will be searching for information. ICQ: are you going to read fast? Are you going to look for each answer? are u going to work in pairs (no) do you have a lot of time? (4-6mins)- (Q2.a for demo: use short answers) - Ss do this alone. (T gives clear instructions: answer all questions, indv) ICQ here T monitors ss , helps when needed -Ss check with their partners. - T gives correction and feedback (correct answers will be displayed on OHP)

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • Controlled speaking practice in the context of asking questions in the simple past

- Before ss work on activity2 in the handout, (Write Q's for the answers) , T demonstrates example 1 , ICQ's: Are you going to write questions? Do you have the answers for the questions? Are you going to use the simple past? Are you going to work alone?(Pair work) , T monitors while ss work -T gives answers (OHP)then Drill questions. - Ss look at information about Dhafer el Abidine (OHP) - SS form questions using that information ( This can be done in groups) (At this stage T monitors) - T correction and feedback
