Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using an article entitiled, "Should I let my child take more risk?"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adolescent, chronic disease in the context of Should I let my child take more risk?


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A picture of the article 'Should I let my child take risk? Have them make prediction of the article. I will give them 3 headlines to pick from. I would have them work in pairs for a minute, then have a class centered discussion for a minutes. During feedback I would write their prediction on the board.

Pre-Readiing and vocabulary (3-8 minutes) • To prepare students for gist reading and introduce new vocabulary

To prepare the student for gist reading and answering questions. Introduce new vocabulary by showing them pictures. Elicit vocabulary, write them down on the white board along with the part of speech and their pronunciation. After, I will drill them.

While-Reading gist (10-12 minutes) • Gist reading gist information reading to obtain main idea

Allow a quick read of 3 minutes, pair group and have them discuss their predictions for 2 minutes. After, I would handout 5 questions. They would have 5 minutes to answer. then they work in peer group reviewing their answers for 2 minutes. Ask if their any one who disagree with their partner and have a conflicting answer.

While-Readiing (8-10 minutes) • scanning

A set of 5 questions specific

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will write letter to the author expressing their opinion about the article
