Description

In this lesson students read for gist and scanning for specific details through guided discovery. At the beginning I'll show students a picture for a date and elicit the meaning from the students. Then they work in pairs and in groups to do the activities for gist and scanning. Then I'll give them three advertisements for men and they decide which one is the best for Lynn. Next I'll practice the present simple by giving some examples and drilling.Then I'll asx them to ask and answer to pracise more the present simple

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Online dating in the context of date dating agency partner

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise the present simple.
  • To provide practice and review of Past simple in the context of Online dating

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To generate interest of the topic of the lesson.To activate students' existing knowledge of the topic.

I'll show students a picture of dating and I'll give some question to talk a bout the picture.They'll discuss the questions in pairs.

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To pre-teach key lexis needed to help students understand the text.To pre-teach lexis needed to help students complete the next task.

I'll direct students to look at the small advertisement excerpt 6 million dates Check that they know what the headline mean and what the dating agency mean .Students will be asked to discuss the three questions in pairs then I'll discuss them with the whole class.Then, I'll add some of the advantages and disadvantages if they haven't been raised.

Reading for gist (4-5 minutes) • To encourage students toread for gist to get an overview of the text.

I'll tell students that this advertisement is about a single mother has written to the dating agency describing her self and the partner she would like to have.Then I'll ask students in pairs to look to the text quickly and find answers to the seven questions.

Reading for specific information (8-10 minutes) • To practise reading for specific information (scanning)to familiarize learners with the text.

I’ll divide the class into two or three groups according to their number and I'll tell students there are definitions of some words in the text under their group names. . A student from each group will run to the board, get a definition and discuss it with his group in order to find the word in the reading text. Having found the correct answer, another student of the group will run to the board with the answers. This activity goes on until they found all the words .I’ll tell them that to win in this activity you have to finish first with the most correct answers. The main aim of this activity is to skim, scan, and reading for detailed information and also guessing meaning from context.

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To practise reading for detailed comprehension for learners to understand the text in depth.

I;ll ask students to read the advertisements for three men.They then read the fifteen sentences and decide which ones are about the persons in their advertisement and tick them.Then they re-read the advertisements and underline the good and bad about the person in their text.Afterthat, students get into groups to to compare their points and to decide on the best partner for Lynn.

Post-reading (8-10 minutes) • To allow opportunity to react to the text. To develop oral fluency on the topic.

I'll practise the present simple and students can give sentences, put sentences in the correct order ,ask and answer about the sentences .Finally.they'll be asked to ask each other using "How often" .
