Description

In this lesson, students practise speaking as much as possible. The lesson starts with discussing facts about Australia. This is followed by a clarification of the vocabulary and one listening exercise where students listen and answer questions. Finally, the students mingle and discuss a country of their preference.

Main Aims

  • To get students practise speaking as much as possible

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make students know as much as possible from Australia
  • To provide clarification for words mentioned either in the tasks of the book or in the recording.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss the world map Elicit the words "countries", "islands" then " Australia" Show ss the map of Australia Ask ss to discuss what they know about Australia Check instructions

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Give ss hand-outs (Australia's map) Tell ss that we will deal with some vocabulary they will need in a later task Elicit from ss some "words" meanings Give ss hand-outs (vocabulary) Ask ss to listen to the recording and match things (vocabulary) with places Ask ss to compare their answers (pair work)

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Elicit from ss how they recommend, not recommend and describe Tell ss how to express recommendation (positive and negative) and description Give ss hand-outs (recommendation, description etc...)

Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask ss to choose a country Give ss thinking/preparation time to make notes about what they're going to say (recommend, not recommedend and describe) a country of their preference Tell ss to stand up and ask them to talk to everybody using the expressions in "useful language"

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Correct ss as they mingle in class Show ss the "responding" section and explain it
