Description

This lesson will introduce the theme of 'Parents and Teenagers' through a reading task for Ss to practice their reading (receptive skills and a further reading activity to check there understanding. The vocabulary will focus on verbs and phrases related to the topic of the text and will be introduced through brain storming activities and flash cards.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text to develop receptive reading skills

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice on vocabulary and speaking related to the theme of parents and teenagers with annoying habits

Procedure

Stage 1: Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T will show two pictures of a mother and daughter annoying one another to Ss on the OHP and elicit a description of the behaviour from the students using questions. Q1. What is happening in this picture? What is the mother doing? What is the daughter doing? Are these good habits or bad habits? -T- will use WB to list the answers next to the pictures.

Stage 2 -Pre-Reading 1 (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- T will introduce supporting vocabulary (taken from the main text) such as: Knocking', 'Complain', Interesting, Leave, Terrible, Channel using flash cards on the WB and will use CCQs to find out if Ss understand the MFP of these words.

Stage 2: Pre- Reading 2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T- Writes the following two sentences on the WB 1. What complaints do parents have about teenagers? 2. What complaints do teenagers have about parents? T- Groups Ss in to 2 groups with on group consisting mostly of parents to discuss Q1 and the other with younger Ss to discuss Q2. Will give them 2 minutes to discuss the question in there groups and then brain storm FB on the WB

Stage 4 - While-Reading 1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will introduce the reading task on p28 on teenagers have annoying habits- but so do parents! and ask students to gist read the passage. (Will project it on OHP also to show the highlighted text). S will gist read the text (1 minute) T- will use CCQs to check what they understood from the text. T- Instructs studnets to read again and write P if they think the sentence is stated by a parent and T if its a teenager. (2 minutes) S. Will swap there answers with each other and check each others work. T - will go through answers with the whole class

Stage 6- While reading 2 (4-6 minutes) • Set a follow up task to reinforce what students learnt in the reading 1 stage

T- Will introduce another reading activity related to the main task were students are required to answer True or False for each statement. S- will work individually on this task (3-4 minutes) and use the main reading text (reading for deduction) to help them come up with the correct answer. T- Will circle room and monitor Ss until they have finished the task T- Will get students to check each others answers and ask students to share for the correct answers with the whole class after.

Stage 7- While reading 3 (5-7 minutes) • Read again and focus on verbs and phrases

T- Will introduce the task using the reading text projected on the board and ask students to read the text again and focus on the highlighted verbs and phrases S will S- will read the text again (1 minute) T- will instruct studnets to work in groups to discuss the meaning of the highlighted verbs and phrases.(2 minutes) T- will ask students to CCQa to see if they all understand the meaning and correct form and pronunciation of the verbs and phrases in the task.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T- will instruct the students to 'Think about the the main text again and this time List 5 habits they find annoying. S- will work in pairs o discuss this T- will nominate different pairs of Ss to share there answers with the whole class.
