Main Aims

  • To intoduce and give practice in using the past continuous tense.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about the past.

Procedure

Lead-In (3-4 minutes) • To review recently learned lexis and grammar

-Teacher greets the students and gives a handout including the following questions. The students discuss in groups and reports to the class: "Who remembers yesterday's class? What did you talk about? Which words did you learn? How did Doug, Tamsin and Kelly feel in their stories?" - the students put the small pieces of papers under the correct name on the board

Building Context (8-10 minutes) • To generate interest and use their schemata to activate background knowledge.

-Students look at the 1st slide of the presentation and give a name to the character and discuss who he is and give names to the characters and guess the relationship between the characters guided with the following questions: "Who is she?", "What is her name?", "Do they know each other?" -T opens the story board and regroups the students in threes and the students discuss what the story is about in 2 minutes. -T students write small pieces about the story.

Reading Task (4-5 minutes) • To contextualize and introduce the target language

- Students are handed in the paper and read the story carefully. - T writes the following question on the board and Ss discuss it with their partner. " Do you think this was really embarrassing, why?"

Clarifying target language/ MFP (15-16 minutes) • Clarifying meaning so the learners understand, pronounce and construct it.

Meaning -Students look at part A of Handout 1 and try to find a sentence or sentences that correlate with the headings. After they are finished, they check their answers with their peers. - Teacher goes to the slide of model sentence and asks CCQs as follows: "Where was he when the dog came? Was he there before the dog came? Was he there after the dog game? Did they continue chatting when the dog came?" -Students look at part C of Handout 1 and discuss the difference between the sentences with their partners. Teacher asks CCQs to clarify meaning. Form and pronunciation -Students look at part B of Handout 1 and fill in the gaps accordingly. T elicits answers. - While taking example sentences, teacher does "Repeat after me!" drills and uses her hand as a model sentence model.

Controlled Language Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide controlled language practice

-Ss fill in the gaps on page 21, grammar part 1 individually. Then check with their partner. Teacher ICQs: "What will you do here? -Fill the gaps. What tenses will you use? _ Past Progressive and Past simple. Will you get help?- No. Will yo check with your partner after?- Yes." -T hands out the answer key as feedback.

Free Language Practice (7-8 minutes) • To give controlled practice in using past continuous

- Teacher divides the class into three groups. - Students look at the photos for 20 seconds and try to remember each one as much as possible. -Students try to answer the questions given. -Teacher shows the answer key in the PP presentation and asks how many of the questions did they get correctly.

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To give free speaking practice

- T divides the class into two. -One group asks and another answers according to the papers at their hands -They change pairs with each beep.
