Description

By the end of this lesson Ss will be able to do skimming, scanning and extensive reading. Context of the lesson will be behavior/attitude in difficult situation. New vocabulary related to the context will be provided to help student read the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about making a decision in difficult situation in the context of behaviour

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of verbs with similar meaning in the context of behaviour in difficult situations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Ask Ss for an example of an important decision that a person may have to make in their life - Ask also about ethics and principles (related to new vocabulary and context) whether they are important in making a decision - Give personal example as a role play if needed - Write some of the examples on board and discuss with class which they think are the most difficult decision to make

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Write headlines on the board - Ask Student to predict the relation between the headlines and making a decision in difficult situations -Give the HO-1 -Peer checking -Elicit FB from WC

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Give Ss about 5 miniature for a gist reading and ask them to find answer for the question below: 1. What are the difficult decisions in each texts? -Write the question before to start the task -When time is up, ask Ss to turn down the reading text to discuss their answers in pairs -Elicit FB from WC

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Give the HO-2 and ask student who do they think said each sentence - Set student for PW - Give 5-7 minutes for a scanning the text and identify all the people in the articles even if they do not know their names -Do the first as an example - Peer checking - Eliciting FB from WC

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Ask student to discuss what they would have done in the same situations - Set students for GW to discuss their answer - Elicit from WC and vote for how many students would have kept the money

Follow-up activity (5-10 minutes) • Vocabulary related to the context

- Ask Ss to turn down their HO-1 - Write the following on 1. -------- a decision 2. -------- your principles 3. -------- a situation - Elicit the possible answer from WC - Give 1-2 minutes and ask Ss to complete the word webs in HO-3 (they should use monolingual dictionary) - Elicit the answers with weaker Ss -Ask Ss to draw lines to match with similar meaning and check their answer with partners -Give HO-4 to review new vocabulary - Elicit answers as a WC - Give few minutes and ask Ss to complete HO-5 to practice new vocabulary -Peer checking - ASk Ss : what do you think each person did on HO-5? - Ask Ss: can you remember a time where you decided to stick or go against your principles? - Elicit the answer from WC
