Description

In this lesson, students are going to read an extract from Andre Agassi's autobiography to improve their reading skills and will discuss their opinions about his life for fluency speaking.

Materials

Abc hand-out

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about the famous tennis player Andre Agassi in the context of parent pressure on kids

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of Andre Agassi's autobiography

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss to work in pairs and discuss the questions projected on the board. Then ask what they have found about their partners. Show ss the pictures of Andre Agassi ask for some predictions about his childhood and career.

Reading Activity 1 (15 minutes) • To provide gist meaning reading activity to learn certain facts about Andre's life for the upcoming extract from his autobiography.

Give ss the hand outs and ask them to read it quickly and find the information from the text for each question in pairs. Give WC FB.

Reading activity 2 (15 minutes) • To provide the target language for reading in the context of an extract from Andre's autobiography.
Stage 1 • To provide an activity to make predictions about the topic (gist meaning)

Project the two questions and ask them to discuss in pairs and give WC FB.

Stage 2 • To provide reading for specific information. (Scanning)

Ask ss to read the text again and find the answers to the questions from the extract in pairs. Give WC FB.

Stage 3 • To provide detailed reading practice

Ask ss to mark the statements with their partners and underline the part that gives them the answer. Ask why for NS statements.

Post-reading (10 minutes) • To provide fluency speaking to respond to the text and expand on what what they have learnt

Put papers (i agree- I disagree- I partly agree) on three different places o the floor. Tell ss you are going to see some statements and they will move to one of the stations if they agree' partly agree or disagree with the statement. On each station, they will share their ideas explaining why. Then ask ss to find a person who has the opposite idea from the other group and discuss why. Repeat it for each statement. Give WC FB.
