Description

In this lesson students will be focusing on vocabulary exercises, receptive skill development by listening to audio and reading some text to get the gist and look for specific information from the conversation.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and listening practices from a piece of text that includes vocabulary such as "my ambition is, investor" in the context of success

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice of vocabulary including "hopes, dreams, ambitions" in the context of success

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T shows slide show to elicit the word "entrepreneurs" - T asks Ss to repeat after them to say the words "entrepreneurs" and "investors" - T asks questions to the Ss for 1 minute about the slide show. - Can they think of any other people who are entrepreneurs? Maybe from their country? - T asks Ss to read alone the text titled: Connections - T asks Ss to answer question 1 in pairs. - T asks Ss for FB and T provides the answer.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- T tells Ss to look at the picture of Olga, ask the Ss: What do you think she is doing? What do you think she is talking about? - T models/demonstrates the vocabulary for listening exercise 2a. - T reads the question to the class and explains they will listen to the exercise. They can label the drawing as they listen. - Ss work in pairs to check their answers. - T labels the drawing and the Ss can check their answers. - How does the bag work? - get Ss to discuss in groups. - T shows the answers from the script on the WB and Ss can also highlight on their paper.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Question 2b) T reads the questions - in Pairs Ss read the questions and discuss their ideas. - Ss listen to the rest of the interview. - In their pairs Ss check their ideas against what they've just heard. - T provides Ss with answer key. Question 3a) - Students discuss the questions in groups. - T asks for their FB and what their predictions are. 3b) - Ss listen to the audio to check their predictions, who guessed correctly?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

4a) - In pairs can Ss remember who said what? T will monitor to check the answers. 4b) - T reads one of the questions out and does as an example. -In groups Ss have the sentences cut up into strips. The have to decide are they adjective + about or noun + about - T will provide each group with an answer key.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

5) T labels Ss "A, B, A, B and tells all A's to one side and all B's to the other. - Find another person to pair up with in your group. - A's: Look at your product B's: look at your product. Answer the questions how are you going to sell your product? You have 3/4 minutes to do this. - T says to everyone stand up, T picks 1 student from group A to go over to group B and vice versa. Talk to your partner and sell your product! - Finally go back to your original group (all the A's and all the B's) and learners explain their ideas to the rest of the group. Take a class vote on the best idea.
