Description

During this lesson, ss will focus on vocabulary and speaking. SS will be introduced to new vocabulary related to work.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of qualifications in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give ss freer speaking practice using vocabulary linked to work/qualifications

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ensure that the pictures needed for the lead-in are ready SS look at the pictures Now, ask ss which job from the pictures they like to the most/least Next, the ss discuss the reason for their choice in pairs.

Test (6-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ask ss to check the phrases written in bold on the handout of task 1. Ask ss to categorize the phrases into the three listed categories while working in pairs. SS need to discuss their choice at the same time.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Check the answers provided by the ss in the previous exercise. Tell ss that you will be checking their understanding of the vocabulary items used in the previous exercise. Elicit the meaning of the phrases/words. Drill the explained phrases/words.

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Demonstrate an example of task 2 with great care. Ask ss to replace the definition in bold with a phrase from the vocabulary of task 1 while working in pairs. Monitor the pairs closely and correct when appropriate.

Freer practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Explain the context of the task (a job interview). Specify the roles that ss will play. Give the job ad and role cards to the students. Give ss 5 minutes to prepare their roles and then start the interviews. Continuously monitor the discussion and take notes without intervening.
