Description

In this lesson,SS will practice productive skill as writing and vocabulary in a communicative way.

Main Aims

  • To provide controlled writing practice on the context of a formal letter about complaint.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide oral fluency with a discussion in the context of crime.
  • To provide practice of formal words like regard,concern, etc. in the context of a formal letter of complaint.

Procedure

Stage 1 - Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write article of the text on the WB. -Police to Install Town-Wide Surveillance- Ask SS: What do you think about this article? Can you make a guess about what are we going to read? Work in pairs and discuss. Elicit the predictions and ask if they agreed or not.

Stage 2 - Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading.

1-Give text and ask SS to read the text first individually. 2 minutes ICQs; How many minutes do you have? Are you going to work in pairs or alone? Then give questions and ask SS to answer questions in PW. 3 minutes Elicit feedback from WC. 2-Ask SS: Is there any police? Most of you are parents,aren't you? Then group SS as parents,teenagers. Ask SS to make a list of your reasons for or against the plans. 5 minutes

Stage 4 - Writing 1 (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skill(Writing) by writing a formal letter.

Ask SS if they know what is the complaint letter? Give them questions to discuss questions and write the answers in PW. 3 minutes. CCQ: What is a letter of complaint? Ask them the meanings of the words: Promptly,matter,concern,respond,confirm. Then elicit the answers from them if not give them examples to guess the meaning. Tell the words in a clear pronunciation and repeat. Drill the words. After all of these,write words on the board. Give the letter and ask SS to read alone. After reading give the questions and want them to write the answers and their reasons. 5 minutes Elicit and check the answers and discuss the reasons as WC. ICQs: How many minutes do you have for this activity? Are you working in pairs? What are you going to do? Give SS parts of a letter of complaint.Ask them to order them in GW. SS can get help from the letter that they have read. Then want them to check their answers with other group. 3 minutes ICQs: Are working alone? How many minutes do you have? Can you use the text or not?

Stage 5 - Writing 2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skill(Writing) by writing a formal letter.

Ask SS to find the formal phrases in the letter that match the informal phrases. Ask them to write the answers alone. 3 minutes ICQs: What are you going to do? How many minutes do you have? Are you working in a group? Ask SS to plan a letter of complaint in pairs. Ask them to choose one of the situations,decide what you want to achieve in the letter,make notes on the content of each paragraph in 3 minutes. ICQs: How many minutes do you have? Are you working alone? What are you going to do? CCQs: What is the stages of writing a letter of complaint? Give them a template letter and ask them to write a letter. 5 minutes Work as groups. Remind them to use formal language phrases. Make delayed error correction Ask SS to stick their letter on the WB and check the other group's letter to make them see different letters. 2 minutes
