Reading Skill
Pre-intermediate, A2/B1 level

Description

In this lesson Ss will practice reading skills through a reading context. First they will make predictions about some of the best airports and then read for gist. They will be familiar with the vocab in the text through flashcards. For detailed questions Ss will scan the text and do some matching and True/False activities. Ss read the text again to infer contextual meaning of the highlighted vocab in the text. In the last stage, Ss will practice speaking through role play.

Materials

Abc True False Cards and Questions

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed and inference reading practice using a text about top airports in the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of vocabulary related to airport in the context of the top airports.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T elicits the transportations from Ss through some questions. Qs: Where did you go on your last holiday? How did you go there? T writes the questions on board. T gives time (1 minute) to Ss to discuss these questions with their friends and then asks Ss about their pairs.

Pre-Reading 1 (5-7 minutes) • To introduce some supporting vocabulary

T shows the flashcards (pictures) and asks Ss for the vocabulary, with the unknown words T shows the name behind the card. T pins the cards on the board and as Ss drill them T takes them from the board.

Pre-Reading 2 (3-5 minutes) • to get Ss thinking about reading

Ss will look at some photos of airports and discuss the name of the airports in their groups.

While-Reading1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading tasks

Ss will read for gist in a minute to check their predictions about the airports.

While-Reading 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read the text to answer more detailed questions. After they answer the questions alone, they write their initials on the paper and check their friend's answer through the answer key. Ss are given a - one side green, the other side red card. They hold the card for True or False answers.

While-Reading 3 (8-10 minutes) • to deduce meaning of vocabulary from context

Ss will focus on the highlighted words in the reading. T elicits from ss how to deduce the meaning from the context, for the first word "security" T asks "Where do we go after check in at the airport?" Ss deduce the meaning in their groups. To check the meaning of the words T divides class into two. Ss play a taboo card game.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are given role play cards with some prompts and act out a role play in pairs to practice the TL.
