Description

This lesson sets the context for Functional Lexis through reading and speaking. Students are familiar with much of the TL, but I still need to make sure the students have a good understanding of the linkers.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of time sequencers in the context of love

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about love in the context of having fun
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of having fun

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Ask a couple of questions about clubs: 1. When was the last time you went to a club? 2. What do people do in a club? 3. Do people feel happy or sad there?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Put the SS in groups of 5 - Give the SS handout 1 and ask them to read individually and answer the general question - SS check their answers in group * Don't forget the time-limit

Highlighting (10-12 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Stick the cutouts 1a phrases on the board - Give them 2 min to match them with the text - Ask them to check their answers in pairs - Give them the further questions of the text to answer individually - Ask them to check their answers in pairs. - Give them the answer key - Focus on some of the questions that lead to the TL

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Stick the sentences with TL of 1C on the board - Eliciting the meaning of the sequences - complete the missing lines on the board - Ask CCQs - Focus on the pronunciation

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Give them the handout of p.129, ex.2C - Ask them to do it individually - Ask the students to check their answers in pairs - Give them the answer key

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Give the students some sentences - Ask the students to complete them in their own funny way individually - Put the students in groups of three - Ask them to share their answers - Ask some random students to share their ideas with the whole class
