The big wide world quiz (comparatives & superlatives)

Description

In this lesson, the students will review comparatives, superlatives and some modifying adverbs by reading, listening and speaking about countries all around the world. The students are expected to produce the target langauge at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide review of Comparative, superlative, certain modifying adverbs in the context of countries

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice, listening and reading practices in the context of countries around the world.

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell ss they will see a video and ask them to keep in mind as many countries as possible while they are watching it. Ask ss not to take any notes. Then ask them which countries they remember. and try to elicit what they know about those countries and how they found them.

Stage 1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide the target language through reading to induce forms and rules

Ask ss to do the quiz individually and then work in pairs for peer-check. Tell ss they are going to listen and check their answers and they will also hear one more piece of information about each question. Give them a few seconds to take notes after listening to each question. Then ask them to share what they noted with their partners. Give WC-FB. Finally ask ss to find comparatives and superlatives in the quiz in pairs. Give two examples and ask ss to identify them. Students do the rest in pairs. Give WC FB.

Stage 2 (10-15 minutes) • To review the rules for comparative, superlative and modifying adverbs used with them and common phrases used with superlative.

Give ss instructions about the hand-out you are about to give. Try to elicit one example for each part. Ask ss to work in pairs. and then check each-other's answers. Give WC FB. and ask some CCQs. (Write "Is it a big difference or small difference?" on the board and try to elicit what we can use if there is a a big difference or a small difference.)

Stage 3 (5 minutes) • To provide practice on what they have just learnt in stage 2.

Tell ss to use two words to complete the information from the quiz and work in pairs. Review the given example if necessary. Ask ss to check their answers with the partner. Give WC FB.

Stage 4 (8-10 minutes) • To provide fluency speaking in the context of "compare countries&continents" game.

Tell ss that they are going to play a game. They play in pairs. Each of a pair pulls a card from the bunch faced-down and compare the two countries in one minute getting help from the clues given.(Write them on the board. Ask them to try to use what they have learnt.(modifying advers) Ring the bell every minute for them to change pairs and pick up a new card. Remember to monitor while they are palying. Ask them if they heard anything funny or interesting while playing to give FB.
