Main Aims

  • By the end of this course ss will have practiced controlled speaking and Wh and Yes/No question forms in the context of leisure activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice vocabulary and collocations.

Procedure

Lead-in (2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss my camera. Ask the following Qs: What is this? What do you use it for? Tell the ss that this is my camera and that I like taking photographs in my free time.

Pre-speaking task (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary and CCQ as needed

Demonstrate the matching task (picture- name of leisure activity) first to whole class, then to each group. ICQs, if necessary. Ss practice Feedback: group check and handouts with answer key.

Speaking 1 (10-15 minutes) • To further prepare students for controlled practice of TL (Wh and Yes/no Qs)

Demonstrate Ex 2 p. 31 very carefully/ first I will say what I think two students like (once for each), then I'll ask one student then another to do the same. Then I will tell the students to talk about what they think I like in pairs. Remind them about the examples of leisure activities in the handout. ICQs: Are you going to talk about what 'hassen' likes? Are you going to write your answers? ss practice.

Speaking 2: Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To pactice Wh and Yes/No question forms.

Ask the students to ask me their questions about what they think I like. Show Qs from EX2 P.31 to the students to use as a guide. If students still seem interested and engaged and there is enough time, ask them to ask me 'why' Qs about what I like and don't like

Speaking 3: Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Split the students into two seperate groups (if tardy student Manel hasn't arrived yet, otherwise three) Demo Ex3 and provide a projection of the sentences from Ex3 p. 31 for the students to use as a guide. Switch groups when they start to quiet down. Monitor for delayed error correction. See if students know any other activities not on the list. Demonstrate and see if they can come up with more examples.

Wrap-up/ flexi stage (5-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Error correction and adios. If I still have time, demo charades then ss play in two groups.
