In this lesson, SS will be engaged in S focused listening and speaking skills by watching a video about the Beijing Olympic Games,the Berlin Wall coming down,the death of Diana,the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the first person on the moon in context of flashbulb memories and listening for gist and specific information related to these events .Then after aims are completed,work on productive skills in groups.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and gist listening practice using a text about the Beijing Olympic Games, the Berlin Wall coming down, the death of Diana,the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the first person on the moon in the context of flashbulb memories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discuss in the context of events in their country's recent history

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To provide a speaking activity through a question to create awareness about the main subject.

-Ask them to work in pairs. -Ask a question about the big world events that happened in the last 10 years and talk about it with their partners. -Ask ICQs. *Are you going to talk about future or past events? * Can you talk about an action that happened 100 years ago? FB: -Ask which events they talked about.

Matching activity (4-5 minutes)

- Ask them to work in pairs again. -Tell them to match the pictures with the events. -Pass out HO's for students to read and match. FB: Display the answers and check altogether.

Putting the events in the order which they happened (4-5 minutes)

- Ask them to work in pairs -Tell them to try to put the events in the order in which they happened. FB: Check the answers all together.

Creating awareness (4-5 minutes) • To provide a controlled speaking activity by addressing them a question in context of past events.

-Ask them to work as a group. -Tell them to discuss which events they think people remember the most and why. FB: -What did you talk about?

Pre-listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide them with a matching activity to teach and check understanding the key words.

-Tell them to work in pairs -Ask them to match the words with the definitions. FB: -Display the answers. -Ask CCQs to make sure they have learnt the new vocabulary.

While-listening (5-7 minutes) • Listening for gist

-Tell them they are going to watch a video. -Play the video. -Put them in pairs. -Ask which events from exercise 1 are mentioned and which other events are mentioned. FB: -Discuss the answers as a class.

While-listening (4-5 minutes) • Reading for specific information

-Tell them to watch the video again -Ask them to work in pairs and answer the questions FB: -Answer the questions as a class

Post-listening (9-10 minutes) • To provide them with a speaking activity to use and talk about what they have learnt

-Put them into small groups -Tell them read and discuss the questions FB: -Ask them what they found out about the world and their country.
