Holidays - Vocabulary and Grammar Past Simple: regular and irregular verbs

This lesson will continue with the same general context of the previous lesson and provide opportunities for Ss to practice vocabulary and grammar using the topic of 'holidays'.It provides more supporting vocabulary.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in speaking for fluency and accuracy in a conversation about their last holidays.

Procedure

Stage 1-Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set the topic of lesson and engage students

To get Ss interested in the topic i will introduce a starter activity for students to match 10 words (some previously used in earlier lessons) related to the topic and get them to match the words with pictures and then write the word win the correct place.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a model for their speaking

Introduce Reading exercise using Grammar - Past simple (regular/irregular) task p165 from English File Pre-Intermediate Teachers book Using the question ' Did Ruth have a good holiday?' Introduce the Gap fill exercise 2 P165 and then give out HO. Use the gap fill exercise 3B to Gist read the dialogue Give students 2 minutes to Gist read the task without filling the gaps. Use CCQs to get the correct verbs that fill the gaps (students need to put pens down). Write a few on the board and correct any errors that may arise. After brief FB instruct students to work in pairs and do exercise 3 Gap fill. Use CCQ to get correct answers from students.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight useful language or features of the organisation of the text

-Get students to notice how Ruth describes her Holiday in the gap fill exercise - use WB Use SS Book p152 Vocal exercise 3 (Adjectives) to introduce more useful vocabulary/ This will introduce further useful questions related to the topic.

Productive Task (10-12 minutes) • To give students practice in the target productive skill

Introduce task 6 Speaking p13 SSbk and give students time (3-5 minutes) to think about the questions in task 6A+B and get Ss to work together to write the questions first - will use CCQs and drill them for the correct answers. Give students a few minutes (2 minutes) to think about there last holiday. Pair student together and get them to interview one another and ask each other about their holiday and show interest in what the other says and ask for further information. Encourage them to show interest and focus them on phrases.(Exercise 6c) Monitor and take notes of errors for delayed FB.

Feedback and error correction (3-5 minutes) • To Provide students with feedback on production and language

Give feedback on the final task and focus on error correction by using WB to write errors that need correcting. - General feedback on final task.
