Main Aims

  • To check knowledge of basic vocabulary for talking about family.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice numbers from 0 to 10, and try something more ambitious like telephone numbers or prices in different currencies.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce yourself. Play track (1.15) Review and practice numbers from 0-10. Give Ss HO 1. Do the exercise and practice writing telephone numbers by dictation.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through images

Draw a girl on the board and write "a girl". Draw more girls and write "four girls". Same with boys. Count boys and girls on the board together and write "six children". Erase all the drawing except one and write "a child". Give Ss HO 2. Give Ss instructions about exercise 1. Play track (1.16). Ask Ss to write answers, and check in pairs.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language, I’m – I’m not, we’re – we’re not

Play track (1.17). Ss are asked to read and listen. Notice "I’m not" and "have no children".

Clarification (2-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Drill with whole class I’m – I’m not, we’re – we’re not. Ask "are you married?" "have you got any children?"

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Drill I’m – I’m not, we’re – we’re not. Play track (1.19). Let Ss do exercise 3.b and check answers in pairs. Then check by nominating.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Pair work speaking: using the 6 photos on page 87.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Give learners the table (HO3). Ss mingle and talk to other person. They say their information and the other learner writes it in the table. Go round and check as learners are speaking. When they have completed the table, Ss sit down and compare with their partners and rest of the class.
