Description

In this lesson, students learn about positive and negative forms of ''be'' including the short forms through productive speaking and basic writing activities. Lesson starts with speaking activity about some pictures. This is followed by a grammar activity in which students fill in a chart using correct forms of ''be''. Then, students study on pronunciation by looking at an audio script.

Main Aims

  • For students to be able to understand positive, negative and short forms of ''be'' and use them in their sentences while speaking in the context of short conversations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • For students to be able to practice positive, negative and short forms of ''be'' and make sentences using those forms of ''be''.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (3-4 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for the SS

- greet the whole class and ask if they are fine today or not - without reading anyoutthing from the book, make the students look at the pictures at the top of the page and tell their ideas about their age, clothes and appearance.

Stage 2 (Matching Sentences with the Photos) (6-7 minutes) • To provide some information about the photos and make the students guess the information about the people in the photos by comparing them

- Make the students match the sentences with the photos and after finishing compare their answers with their partners - Make the students read the audio script (Unit 1 Recording 7) on page 166 and find out if their answers are true or false.

Stage 3 (Filling in the table with the correct forms of ''be'') (2-3 minutes) • To make students aware of the short and negative forms of ''be'' and see their forms.

- Handout the table (in the bigger form prepared by the teacher) to the students - Observe and wander around the class while they are filling in them

Stage 4 (Pronunciation Study) (5-6 minutes) • To make the students tell the short forms of ''be'' correctly

- Make the students listen to the audio-script 1.8 on page 166 - After they listen once, make them listen again pausing after each sentence and make them repeat the sentences.

Stage 5 (To practice about short forms of ''be'' through small-scale writing exercises. (3-4 minutes) • To provide a practice about the short forms of ''be'' through rewriting exercises.

- Handout the photocopy of page 138. on SB - Make students complete exercise 1 and 2 on that page - Make students write down their answers and check their answers through reading one by one.

Stage 6 (Writing one true and one false sentence about themselves and the famous people the students know) (5-6 minutes) • To make the students freer and practice using correct forms of ''be'' through using interesting information about famous people

- Give examples to the students to show what to do (Tarkan is a handsome man, I am 80 years old) - Make the students write their sentences and share those sentences with their partners.

Stage 7 (Group-Work Activity through matching the pieces of paper) (10-15 minutes) • To provide a closure activity (using forms of ''be'' and short answers) in which they will feel relaxed and have fun

- Make the classroom separate as two groups - Design the groups as one group will have question papers, the other one will have short answers - Make them work in groups and try to match questions and answers - Wander in the class and observe them during the activity - Give them feedback
