Description

This lesson starts with the discussion about the topic of journey. This is followed by listening where students listen and try to match the sentences. Finally there is a reading text and a controlled practice for finding mistakes and a free practice via a final role-play interview speaking activity.

  • To give Ss practice in listening for general information, for specific information and for detail.

  • Reading for a specific information and speaking to provide fluency in the topic of journey.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To arouse interest in the lesson

Ask Ss if they know anyone who has been on an unusual journey Tell Ss they are going to listen to 3 more unusual journeys, but first they're going to do some new vocabulary. Using the pictures & other techniques, Elicit/ Pre-teach some vocabulary- Vespa, hitchhike, break a record, charity, polar bear, wildlife, cameraman, injured, pizza delivery.- remember to drill some items & put them on the w/b

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

Tell Ss that before they listen they're going to guess what the stories are about. Show Ss the sets of pictures & tell Ss each story talks about two of the pictures. Tell Ss to work together to match the pictures into pairs & try to make up a story about an unusual journey that includes the two pictures.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss to listen & see if their ideas are correct - match the pictures according to the listening. Get Ss to check their answers with their partners & then take w/c Feedback

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Tell Ss to look at ex 2 & see if they remember which journey matches each question. Give Ss to listen & check their answers. Ss can then check with their partners. Then take w/c FB

Final Listening Task (9-12 minutes) • To provide students with a reading text about the topic with a controlled practice

Tell Ss they're going to read about the 3 journeys, but there are two mistakes in each text. Ss work together to read the texts in ex 3- & find the mistakes. Ss listen and check. Take w/c FB Have a short general w/c discussion about the question in ex 5 - or extend it into pair/ group work for a full speaking stage

Post-Listening, Production & personalisation: (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell Ss to think of a film, book or tv programme that they have seen or read that involves a journey. Give Ss the questions in Speaking ex 1, p.19 & give them a little time to work alone to think of answers to the questions. Ss in pairs then interview each other & tell each other about the book, film, etc. Take some general FB- who had the most interesting story? etc & finish
