In this lesson, students will learn about Past Simple of BE through Guided Discovery based on a reading text about Past Experience / I was there. Students will read 3 stories about three people and their experience in the past when they have visited some event.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells a story about his life. He lives in Istanbul now. He visited Hagia Sophia last year. He visited Sultan Ahmet last month. He visited Abdi Ipekci arena 2 years ago. Outside Istanbul, he visited Ankara 4 years ago. He visited Edirne 3 years ago. He visited Izmir last year. CCQs: Did the teacher visit any place? Which places? When? FB: T select students to help the teacher.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T writes several words on the WB as pre-reading vocabulary: A seat, New Year's Eve, Fireworks. He elicit the meaning. T gives the readings about Melanie, Tanya, and Diego to the students. Students read alone. Then, T gives Ex 2.c to the students. They answer the questions and check in pairs. T select students to read.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T select one positive sentence with 'was/were' from the text. Then he elicit its meaning and takes the sentence as a model sentence. Then he clarify the form and at the end T drills the sentence. Later, he creates a negative sentence and repeats the same procedure, MFP. FB: WC drilling

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives the Ex. 3b to the student to practice the BE verb, positive and negative forms. FB: PW check and T select students to read

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher gives Ex. 5 to the students. Students answer and check in pairs. T select students to answer.

Free Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Student are put in pairs and a topic is given: Which places have you visited in Istanbul, and what did they see there. Sts change several partners.
