In this lesson students will get to know better of the usage of infinitives and gerunds as the second verbs following a first verb in sentences.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Infinitives and gerunds in the context of sports

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of sports

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will have a quick reminder of the last listening; these questions will be asked, 1. Do you remember the last listening? 2. what was it about? 3. how do you like it?

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Written model sentences on the board will be uncovered; A student will be asked to read these sentences; The following questions will be asked, 1. Do you remember when they said these sentences in the listening?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Following questions will be asked, 1. Why do you think some parts are written in different colors? 2. How many verbs are in each sentence?

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The following will be indicated, 1. The verbs. 2. Second words are with ing or to 3. Verbs before them also will be emphasized 4. In English 2 verbs together 2nd verb is always to+verb or ing verbs. Meaning will be emphasized; CCQs will be asked, 1. Did he like it when he played basketball? (Yes) 2. Do we know if he still likes it? (No) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Did he study hotel management? (No) 2. Would he have liked to? (Yes) Pronunciation will be emphasized, Backchaining will be applied, Wanted to and playing's pronunciation will be emphasized, and want to will be marked as linked sounds, Finger technique will be applied. Intonation will be marked; (Falling) Form will be given, Subject (pronoun) + Verb + (Verb + ing) or (Gerund) + Noun (here object) Subject (pronoun) + Verb + (to + verb) or (infinitive) + Noun (here object) They will have time to comprehend. Two desks will be put in the middle of the class; Clarification Activity Papers will be put on the desks; Students will be put in to two groups; Directions will be given for the activity as follows, We are going to turn each paper and guess if it is to be attached on the TO DO part of the Board or DOING part of the board the group with the most correct answers will win, ICQs will be asked as follows, 1. Are we going to turn all the papers at once or the one on the top? (the one on the top) 2. Are we going to do this all together or we will take turns? (take turns) The correct answers will be discussed as WC; Clarification Activity Papers Answerkey will be given to students;

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be asked to do Handout 1; ICQ for this part, Are we going to do this our selves or in pairs? (ourselves) Hand out 2 will be given to students; they will check their answers in pairs; Handout 1 Answer key will be given to students

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will be directed to answer Handout 2; ICQ for this part, Are we doing it ourselves or in groups? They will have time to check their answers in pairs; They will be Provided with the handout 2 answer key.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

they will go through the exercise 1 and try to find their connection with the listening that they heard in previous part. ICQ for this part, Are these related to the listening? (Yes) Are we going to speak about their relationship? (Yes)

Freer Productive skill (Speaking) (5-8 minutes) • Speaking for fluency using the context of sports

They will have time to speak about the following questions, they will have a minute to think while they are standing. What are your favorite sports? Why do you enjoy doing or playing these sports? ICQ for this Task, Are we Still Speaking about the previous part? (No)

Error correction (7-8 minutes) • to correct Student's mistakes while speaking

Notes will be written on the board while they are speaking; They will be asked to sit down; Peer Correction will be applied
