Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of environmentally friendly houses

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a couple renovating their house to be more environmentally friendly in the context of Green houses

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will introduce the topic of green houses by saying: "I try to be environmentally friendly. In my house I try to save energy by turning off the lights in the rooms we don't use. In the winter, I make sure all the windows are insulated. My husband doesn't :) What kind of house am I trying to have? Ecological/environmentally friendly/Green House (trying to elicit the context). Ss will be asked to think" SHOULD we make our houses envoronmetally friendly and if so WHY? (1 idea). T will ICQ, what are you doing? Thinking about if and why we should make our houses environmentally friendly and sharing with partners. (WHY) protecting the planet/saving cost/think of future generations.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will look at the projected photo of a house (projected onto the WB) and T will say "We talked about why we should make our houses environmentall friendly. Can you think of HOW we can do it?" What kind of improvements can be done to make a house more environmentally friendly (2,3 ideas) ICQ - what are we doing? Thinking about then sharing with partner: HOW can we make them friendly? (2,3 ideas) Then they will brainstorm their ideas with partners (pw). Ss will be guided to think about windows, roof, water, electricity, organic garden. Ss then will share ideas with class.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss will produce model sentences from the context (Teacher will elicit sentences by asking "What should a house have to be environmentally frıendly/to be a green house?) Drill vocabulary & model sentences before putting them on the WB. T will put some vocabulary on the side WB as suggestions (solar panels, an updated electrical wiring, window insulation and make sure Ss understand these words CCQ). MODEL SENTENCES - WRITE ON WB e.g. An environmentally friendly house/green house should have isolated windows. A green house should have solar panels A green house should have a new wiring system. S + should + have + N

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1. Ss will be given HO1 and will listen twice to a conversation from the texbook (p. 68 ex 2) between Nell and her friend Becky. Nell and her husband are renovating their house to be environmentally friendly, Becky is visiting. Ss will answer questions based on the listening. And then Ss will compare their answers with partners. ICQ What are you doing? Listen and tick the correct answers. (play min 3:09 - 1:52) 2. Ss will listen to the conversation again and answer questions from HO1, then they will check answers with partners and T will error correct. ICQ and error correct by T. 3 min - Ss will compare answers with partners and share with class. T will error correct. 3. Ss then will be given HO2 from the textbook. Ss will prepare a persuasion plan for their classmates to make 2 small changes in their lifestyles that will have a significant effect on the environment. They will also explain why the changes are important. Model examples will be given to Ss on the WB: " I think you should/ought to install solar panels to save energy." ICQ and then monitored by T. Ss will stand up and mingle and try to persuade other students. WHOEVER HAS THE BEST PLAN, WILL BE AWARDED THE BEST ECO PLAN AWARD :) (certificate given by the T). Ss will share their lifestyle changing suggestions and T will ask who's idea is most practical? Ss will answer. T will ask "Do you think you will put it into practice?"

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will error correct if any mistakes were done during the lesson, vocabulary and model sentences will be drilled. Ss will reflect on the lesson, T will ask "Is it important that we care about environment and the planet? Will you make some little changes about your lives starting today? Well, I hope so :)"
