Description

This lesson starts with vocabulary activity to prepare them to reading, then Ss will be provided reading task for gist and for detailed. Ss will be provided clarification of Past simple which will be grabbed from the text. In Their freer activity Ss will use new vocabulary and Past simple to talk about their life event.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Nelson Mandela in the context of Life events

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of The past simple (positive form) in the context of Life
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Life events of students
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of verbs in the past simple in the context of Life events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show Ss the picture. Put Ss in groups. Ss discuss with each other about what do they see in the picture? -Elicit the answers *Make it clear that these pictures are about the "Life events"

Vocabulary Practice (6-8 minutes) • to prepare Ss to the reading task

-Give HO. -Ss fill the gaps in the phrases with the verbs. *These are the words that they practice in lead-in stage. *Students might do this task in pairs Feedback: 1st:peer-checking 2nd- Students will walk, find the correct word and they will stick it on the board. *Clarify MFP of some words. This is not the main aim. Do not spend a lot of time on it.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Show the picture (Nelson Mandela) ask them who is he. -Put Ss in pars Ss will discuss what do they know about Nelson Mandela? -Elicit the answers.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-Put Ss in groups of three. -Give Students the text -Ss read the text and fill the gaps by sticking with the correct the dates and numbers. -Feedback: 1st- Peer-checking (with other groups) 2nd- Write the answers on the broad.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

-Put Ss in groups of three again. (change the students). -Ss read the text again and put the events of Nelson Mandela`s life in order. Feedback: one student from each group comes on the board and writes the numbers in order.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Show the sentences from the text. -Clarify elicit the MFP -Give HO-1 Ss find the past form of the verbs from the text. Feedback: 1st-Peer-checking 2nd- Ss come on the board and write the answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Put Ss in group and Give HO-2 -Ss will use the verbs and tell each other about their own life events. -Monitor and note the errors on a piece of paper. -Write the errors on the board. Ss work together and correct their mistakes. [*If there is extra time let Ss to write their ideas first. However it would be better for fluency if Ss practice it orally.]
