Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past weekend.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for follow-up questions in the context of weekend activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project some pictures on the WB. Ask Ss "What do you think these people do at the weekend?". Ask one of the Ss "What's your favourite day of the week?", "What do you do on that day?". Get Ss in pairs and tell them to discuss their last weekend. ICQ: Personalise the question and tell them what you did over the weekend. Monitor and provide vocabulary they may need.

Exposure (10-13 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Pre-teach the vocabulary in the upcoming listening passage. Project some collocations on the WB and tell Ss to look at the verb webs and cross out the phrase which doesn't go with the verb. Get them in pairs. They have 1 minute to discuss and cross out on the WB. Drill some of the phrases. Tell them they are going to hear two different conversations in which people talk about what they did last weekend. Project the activity on the WB, tell them to listen and discuss which weekend was similar to their weekend in pairs. Play the recording again. Ss listen and complete the table and compare their answers in pairs. Project the answer key on the WB.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Give Ss a HO with the phrases from the listening passage. Tell them to work in pairs and write Q for Questions, A for Answers, or I for show interest. Project the answer key. Drill some of the expressions. Get Ss into pairs. Give Ss a HO with the follow-up questions and a guided discovery. Project the answer key. Drill.

Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Assign Student A and Student B roles. Tell Ss that Student A will complete chart A, and Student B chart B individually. After they prepare their questions and answers get them into mingled speaking. Tell them to line face to face: Student As in one line and Student Bs in another, they have to face one another. Tell them to ask and answer the questions, then repeat it with another person. Monitor them.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Write students mistakes on the WB considering the TL which is past simple. Get Ss to correct their mistakes.
