Description

In this lesson, Ss learn some new and review some previously learnt vocabulary about towns, they then listen to a conversation about Susan's hometown and complete a gist and listening for details task. As a post-listening activity, Ss are given a few minutes to prepare some notes about their home town or neighbourhood, they will present them to the class and the class will guess where they live.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Susan's home town

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of places around the town, as well as giving Ss an opportunity to describe their own home town

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a picture of a town and a picture of a tourist/ friend with suitcase. elicit from Ss what is happening

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To pre teach vocabulary and fully prepare students for listening and make it accessible

Ss will be given a matching exercise, with pictures and vocabulary about places around the town, such a shops. Mime and say " match the pictures and words" Compare in pairs, WCFB on the WB Followed by pronunciation drills

While-Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist listening tasks

T introduces Susan again. Ss listen once and try to order the main things she talks about in the conversation. Ss check in pairs and each pair writes 1 answer on the board

While-Listening #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, listening task

Ss will listen to the conversation (x2) and answer Qs 2-7 by circling the correct part of the sentence FB in pairs WCFB

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned by personalising the information

Ss will be given a few mins to collect ideas about their hometown or neighbourhood. Guide sheet for notes + demo from teacher if needed Without saying the nameof their hometown/ neighbourhood Ss present ideas to the class, other Ss should guess the name of the hometown. Ss can ask extra questions to find out more information. "are you working together?' -[no] " Do you tell us your hometown's name?" - [no]

If time (3-4 minutes) • to give the students a chance to improve

T writes some incorrect sentences on the wb from the speaking activity and correct together
