Description

To engage the Ss, this lesson will begin with a lead-in by looking at some famous book covers, i.e. Anna Karenina which will be followed by a group discussion pertaining to listening to a recording about Oprah Winfrey to practice their receptive skills. It will begin with a lead-in discussion about book-clubs. This will be followed by listening comprehension tasks related to the topic. Phrasal verb vocabulary will also be introduced whereby the words will be first pre-taught.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context of literature and engage students

- Ss will look at pictures on the WB of various famous novels i.e. Anna Karenina, Dr. Zhivago, The Color Purple, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Les Miserables... - Ss guess what these are: Books, Literature, Novels: Classics, Contemporary, Science Fiction.... -T drills words and stresses intonations where necessary

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible with prediction task

- SS look at various pictures of people reading together to elicit : Book clubs - SS look at Oprah Winfrey's pictures to elicit: Talk show host - T asks prediction questions in preparation of upcoming listening: - What is her background...childhood? (brought up by grandmother on a FARM, victim of ABUSE, ran away from some at 13 yrs, had a STRICT Dad, developed love for reading thanks to her dad) -T drills words and stresses intonations where necessary

While-Reading/Listening #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- T passes out HO1 to SS. - SS read questions and answer them while listening to radio program about talk show host, Oprah Winfrey. - When recording is finished SS compare answers with their pair and share results with WC.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS are given HO-2 and listen to the recording again, this time in more detail, to be able to answer specific questions about the sequence of events in Oprah's life. SS compare answers in pairs and share with WC.

Post-Listening/reading and introduction of sub-aim (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned with introduction of phrasal verbs

T asks SS to sit in In 2 groups and gives HO-3. ICQ! SS rearrange jumble sentences relating to the recording. (4 mins) T gives transcript of recording to 2 groups for them to check their answers. (2 mins) SS stick correctly-ordered sentence on WB. (2 mins) T highlights phrasal verbs (sub-aim) from each sentence on WB and asks SS if they know what they are. (4 mins) - 2-part verbs (v+particle) -gives new meaning i.e.: call off: cancel cut back: reduce point out: identify, show hand out: piece of printed information

Summary Feedback and Post-listening/reading task (5-7 minutes) • To summarize lesson and to practice in further depth, usage of verbal phrases

T summarizes lesson about reading habits and phrasal verbs (2 mins) Should time allow, in pairs, SS answer HO-4. After 5 minutes, SS check answers with answer key.
