Description

In this lesson, students will learn, review, practice past simple (to be) through text-based shape. T will start lesson with some movie posters to generate interest in the topic of the text 'Remakes'. T will introduce language by using a reading text. Later language will be extracted from the reading. T will highlight the subject "to be in the past - was, were", clarification will follow this. MFP. After this Ss will be provided controlled practice, and focus will be on using the language accurately.

Materials

Abc Cut up, gist task 2 HO (Macmillan Press)
Abc HO for controlled practice 1, 2 (adapted from the student's book, Macmillan Press)
Abc Cut up, reading passage (adapted fine-tuned text, Macmillan Press)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the past simple , to be (was-were) in the context of films and their remakes through MFP.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about films in the past in the context of remaking them.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows pictures of film posters of old version films and their remakes through PPT. T asks ss "Do you know them?" "Do you like movies?" T writes " Remakes" on the WB, asks " Which one is the remake?" T asks "was it good?", was it bad?", "when was it?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will give some reading text related to the film posters. T asks students to look at the posters and match with the paragraph. Ss will practice reading for gist. Are you matching the pictures with the paragraph? Is one picture extra? After a few minutes later, T will give another task. Ss will answer these questions in pairs. "Are we answering these questions alone?" (No, w/pairs) T will give FB.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will write extracted sentences from the reading in order to arouse the ss' interest. Is it today or in the past? (Yes) Was it a Chinese film? (No)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will show the meaning, form, pronunciation through ex.2 (p68) T will clarify the target language, set a task and ask students how can we change these sentences to the past tense. T let them think. T will provide the listening, make them listen and guess.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will give another set of grammar practice.(controlled) Work in pairs (3-4) "Are we working in pairs?" "How many minutes have we got?" WCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

(If time) T gives a piece of paper to ss to write about themselves which is written on "when I was a kid.... with some adjectives, nouns. T wants ss work in pairs.
