Description

In this lesson students will be given a text to practice skim reading for gist, scanning for specific information and deducing meaning from a context of travels and journeys.

Main Aims

  • To provide skim reading for gist and and specific information skills and deducing meaning using a text about Lawyer who gives up job to cycle around South America in the context of journeys, alternative life styles.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of alternative life styles and journeys

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show pictures of alternative life. Pictures of circus, clowns, journey, etc. Incite them to speak on with questions.

Pre-Reading Vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Pre-reading vocab: Tell Ss they are going to read a text about travelling, but first you’ll look at some vocabulary. - Elicit the vocabulary – remember, first establish meaning to elicit it, then drill some of the trickier items before writing them on the w/b: perform & performance, clown, journey, juggling, acrobatics audience, sponsored, cycle, frontier

Pre reading prediction (4-5 minutes) • To prepare the students for the text

- Pre-reading prediction: Show Ss the pictures of the man with a bicycle, the clown & the map, & ask them to look at them & the words you just taught. Get Ss to discuss with their partners what they think the reading is about - Ss discuss their ideas & try to predict the content of the reading - Get some general FB on their ideas, but don’t confirm or reject anything yet.

Initial Reading (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss to read the text quickly & see if their ideas were right. Ss read – then get them to check in pairs - Take FB & at this point you can confirm answers - Put the number 36 on the w/b & ask Ss what it refers to in the text – get an answer

Second Reading Task (12-14 minutes) • Reading for details and meaning deduction

Give Ss ex 2 - & tell them to read the text again & find out what the numbers refer to - Ss check together - Ask Ss to look at ex 3 & work in pairs/small groups to find the words in the text that match the meaning in ex 3. - Take w/c FB & deal with any questions

Post-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss what they thought of the man in the text. Then get the Ss to discuss in pairs the questions in ex 4 - Take some general w/c FB
