Description

In this lesson students will be exposed to Past perfect continuous through a text taken from the novel Girl with a Pearl Earring. Students will underline past perfect continuous sentences in the text

Materials

Abc Gap-fill HO,rearrange sentences exercise, change sentences to Past perfect continuous

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice on the past perfect continuous using a text taken from the novel Girl with Pearl Earring

Subsidiary Aims

  • to enable students practice speaking using the past perfect continuous in a personal context

Procedure

lead in/ building context (3-5 minutes) • to generate interest in the topic /theme/ and context of the text

Since the text i will use to clarify the TL is a novel inspired by a painting, students will brainstorm about movies that were inspired by books, paintings or vice versa. Students will try to remember the topic of the examples they mention and share them with WC.

reading task/exposure (3-5 minutes) • to expose the students to the TL within the context of an inspirational work(Girl with a Pearl Earring)

In pairs, students will try to remember the topic of the text they have read with their books closed. The teacher asks if they remember how long had he been working on the painting?The teacher writes the answer on WB for further analysis.

Highlight (3-5 minutes) • to highlight the TL in the context of Girl with Pearl Earring

Before the clarification stage, students will take a look at the grammar box and skim the sentences in ex.2. They will underline past perfect continuous sentences and come up with a model sentence which will be used in the clarification stage.

clarification (8-10 minutes) • to clarify meaning, pronunciation and form of the past perfect continuous in the context of the Girl with Pearl Earring

The model sentence will be "he had been searching for the answer for some time when he finally realized what was missing " CCQ: Where/when do you think we use past perfect continuous? Which action happened the first? Which one is more emphasized in this sentence; the sequence of time or the length of the event? Is there any relation with the present? Another example for the purpose of clarification can be " he had been working on the painting for almost two months. he hadn't been working on the painting for almost two months Had he been working on the painting for almost two moths?

task 1 (2-4 minutes) • To expose the students to a controlled practice that consolidates what they have learned.

Students will have to choose between 10 sentences the ones that should be changed to the past perfect continuous. Students check their answer with their partner. FB will be done with the WC

task 2 (3-5 minutes) • to enable students test their ability to use the TL accurately with a semi-controlled activity

Students will work in pairs and try to rearrange the words to make sentences. Answer key will be given. Feedback will be done with the WC. Common mistakes will be highlighted.

Task3 (8-10 minutes) • to let the students do a free task based on their personal experience

In pairs, students will think of 3 photos of themselves and describe; What was happening in each photo? What had you been doing before each photo was taken? What did you do after each photo was taken? Which one is your favorite and why?

Pronunciation Practice (5-8 minutes) • to expose students to the pronunciation of long vowels within the context of Girl with Pearl Earring

The teacher will hang the words that will be pronounced on the wall. Each group will be categorized according to their sound.Students will work in pairs and find the word that does not go with the groups. The teacher uses the WB for clarification while drilling.

Task 4/ if- time activity (3-5 minutes) • to enable students differentiate between the past perfect simple and past perfect continuous with a semi-controlled activity

Students will use the past perfect simple and the past perfect continuous to fill the blanks. Students will check their anwers with their partner FB will be done with the WC.
