Amy - TP: 5a there is/ there are
beginner level

Description

In this lesson Ss should review the grammar there is/ there are in the context of a city break. By the end of the lesson the students should be able to produce spoken and written sentences to describe things in a city of their choice.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide a review of positive sentences using there is / there are in the context of cities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the students with an opportunity to practice the TL through both speaking and listening.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the Ss the same or another picture of Barcelona and Prague and writes model sentences from the text in the previous lesson. Barcelona: There are many hotels in the city centre. Prague: There's an international airport.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ss complete Ex 1 by adding 'there is' or 'there are' to the sentences individually. Ss compare answers in pairs. Quick WCFB

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T will elicit and write (using red for from) [s] – plural noun [+ pl] There are many of hotels in the city centre. [+ s] There’s an international airport. [there is] [singular noun] T will mark proninciation in green There are many hotels in the city centre [ðər ɑː] – not marked on board as I think phonetics is too complicated for beginners There’s an international airport. [ðeəz]

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Ss will work in pairs using the 'there are two bridges' HO from the teachers book. T first demonstrates the task using the example sentence and a stronger student.

Free practice (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In Groups of 3 or 4 Ss will write a short profile about a city of their choice. Ss should use the TL to talk about getting there, where to stay and things to do / things to eat. If there is time: Ss will verbally present their city to the class and stick their work on the wall. If not much time: T will stick the presentations on the wall Ss will walk around and choose a city that they would like to visit.
