Description

In this lesson students will learn how to complain about a package holiday through listening activities. They will share their own problems they have had on their holidays. Some words will be checked and they will have a role play activity to practice the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and deduction listening practice using a text about Travel and Tourism in the context of Complaining about a package holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of complaining in the context of a holiday package
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role play in the context of Complaining about a package holiday

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Reflect the pictures on the board - Tell them what are they - Ask about their plans for this summer - Tell them to share their previous experiences on vacations - Tell them about my own problems e.g The salt and spices used in my baby's food, the extra money we needed to pay for each cup of tea, a heavy smoker in the next door room, there wasn't any lifeguard in the boat tour and I was about to sink,... - Tell them to share their own problems

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Tell them to take out a piece of paper and take a pen/cil - Tell them that they will write the words i say - Ask them to check their peer's dictation and then check in groups - Reflect the correct spellings on the board - Check if they know the meaning of the words

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

- Tell them that they are going to listen to a conversation between three people about a holiday package - Reflect the questions on the board - Tell them to read them first, - Play the audio track - Replay if needed - Tell them to decide on the answers in groups - Check the answers

While-Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

- Hand out each student a copy of the complaint form - Tell them to take a look at the form -Tell them that they are going to listen to the same conversation again, they need to fill in the gaps as if they are the travel agent - Ask them if they know any of the wanted information, talk in groups - Play the recording - Replay if necessary - Tell them to compare their answers in pairs - Give feedback

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Put them in groups of three, two men and a woman if possible - Give them a copy of the recording script - Play the recording as they are listening to the pronunciation and so, - Tell them to practice the conversation together - When they finish tell them to swap roles IF THERE IS TIME - Tell them to change the information with their own ideas - Give them time to practice and prepare to have the role play in front of the class - Ask a group to come and have their role play in front of the class
