Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice receptive skill and T will help learners process written text. T will use the pictures of two people who try to burn calories through exercise in order to generate interest in the topic of the lesson. T will pre-teach key vocabulary before the gist task. T will ask a question about two pictures on the WB to start the gist reading. T will give four comprehension question for detailed reading, Ss will understand the text in depth. Then, highlighted expressions will be used for necessary pronunciation. From this part of the lesson, as it is post-reading, the ss will have an opportunity to personalize the topic and they will write six sentences about their habit (4 true - 2 false). The learners will read their writing and the other students will guess whether the sentences are true or not.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about energy in the context of burning calories through exercise.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of treadmill, suggest, get straight on in the context of burning calories through exercise.

Procedure

Pre-Reading / Lead-In (2-3 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic of doing exercise and burning calories.

T will show the pictures of two people who are doing exercises, ask questions to the Ss in order to generate the interest. - Is he running? ( No ) - Is he riding a bike or doing the washing? (Both) - Are they working? (Yes)

Pre-Reading / Pre-teach Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To unblock key vocabulary needed to help students understand the text.

T will write four words on the WB (treadmill, suggest, colleague, get (straight) on). T will give colorful paper which is written on some collocations or connotations of these words on the WB. Before T will ask the Ss to stick the related words the Ss will check and discuss together. CCQs : treadmill: Is it for running or walking? (Both) Can we jump on it? (No) suggest: Is it an idea? (Yes) Is it a recommendation?(Yes) Is it advice? (Not necessarily)

While-Reading / Reading for the gist (3-5 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for gist understanding

T will direct the Ss' attention to the pictures that she hung on the WB in the lead-in stage. T will ask who the reading is about. Students will take a look at the text and decide for a few minutes.

While-Reading / Reading for the details (7-10 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension

T will give HO of reading comprehension question, ask the Ss to read the text and answer the questions individually. After reading in a detailed way, ss will check the answers in pairs. ICQ: Are you answering the questions in pairs? (No) Are you checking the answers in pairs? (Yes)

Post-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To practice the highlighted vocabulary

T will give out the sentences which are extracted from the reading text. T will elicit the highlighted expressions from these sentences. "tend to : you often do particular things or you are likely to do things" T will ask the ss which sentences mean 'usually' , 'how often do you do?', 'how long and when you do things?', ss will discuss in their groups.

Post-Reading / Writing (7-10 minutes) • To develop written fluency on the context of habits.

T will set an activity for ss to write six sentences about their habits- four true, and two false. T will give out some ideas to help them to form sentences. After a few minutes later, ss will read their ideas and the other ss will try to guess which sentences are true and which ones are false.

If-time Activity (2-5 minutes)

Taboo can be played. Cards will be brought.
