Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn and practice about functional language using real world ( in a shop ). All of the Ss are adults from about 20-50 years old. Total number of Ss varies from 10-15. Most of Ss are fairly on the same level except a few who have a higher command of English. The ones with higher strength tend to help the weaker ones. It is a motivated team as a whole. Ss are cooperative, friendly and mature. They do their best to follow T instructions and a great rapport between Ss and instructors is established. Turkish is used occasionally amongst Ss for clarification but Ts try to return Ss attention back to speaking English.

Main Aims

  • To provide Clarification and Practice of the functional Language

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a context of the real world in a shop
  • To provide gist listening and listening to details in a shop

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To display a picture of a shop on WB and get Ss engage in the context of the lesson.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Elicit words " this, that, these, those " to Ss. Provide Ss with HO to fill in gaps with " this, that, these, those ". Model an example. Monitor Ss doing the exercise. Check the answers with WC. Ask Ss to listen to two conversations in a shop and write the prices in these conversations, Ex5a. Drill/Elicit some vocabulary that might block Ss understanding. Provide the Ss with the HO to fill in the gaps with prices. Model the task and use appropriate CCQs for clarification of the task. Monitor Ss while doing the task. Check the answers with WC.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Provide Ss with HO. Group Ss in pairs. Model that one S is the customer and the other one is the shop assistance. Ask Ss to continue the Ex based on the HO. - Excuse me. Do you have any.....? - How much is this......please? - How much are those .......please? - Can i have........please? - No, that's all, thanks. - Here you are. Ask Ss to change roles. Ask Ss to have a conversation with their partner. - Yes, they are over there. - It's $........ - They're......each. - Sure. Anything else? - Ok, that's $......

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Ask Ss to plan a shopping trip to the store to buy the following items ( shoes, shirt, bag, hat ) and using the following phrases ( how much? do you have? )

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Group Ss in pairs and ask them to tell each other what they bought from the store. Model to Ss Monitor Ss

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the following task language with Ss. - How much is......? - How much are this, that, these, those.......? - Can I have.......?

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Group Ss in groups of four. Ask Ss to make a conversation using the words - a magazine, - a newspaper - a map - a postcard - a birthday card - a box of chocolate and phrases ( - Excuse me, do you have any......? - How much is this.........? - How much is this....? - can I have......? - Here you.......?
