Main Aims

  • Main Aim: Skills: To give Ss practice in reading, in particular skim reading for gist, scanning for specific information & deducing meaning from context through the context of travel & journeys.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking and Vocabulary

Procedure

Introduction (3-4 minutes) • Introduce myself and find out the names of the students.

Adjective + name game T writes on the board his name and adds an adjective to his name. Ss are asked to do the same. boring benjamin hairy hasan

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic which is traveling

T asks for a volunteer to sit with his back to the board. T writes the word "Travel" on the w/b so the volunteer can't see it. The topic is elicited via the 'backs-to-the-board' game. T writes 'Travel broadens the mind' and Ss tell the T what they think it means. T gives the meaning if students are not sure. T asks some general questions about travelling – where they’ve been, etc. T puts them into pairs and tells them to discuss the questions in Speaking ex 1. T gives out the HOs & Ss discuss the questions about travelling in pairs

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • Elicit pre-reading vocabulary

T tells Ss they are going to read a text about travelling, but first they are going to look at some vocabulary T shows pictures to show the meaning. Ss elicit as much as they can. T helps. Vocabulary is written on the board. Pictures will be projected on the W/B from a Word Document T will drill pronunciation

Pre-Reading Task (4-6 minutes) • Predict the content of the reading

T shows Ss the pictures (on the HO1) of the man with a bicycle, the clown & the map, & ask them to look at them. Get Ss to discuss with their partners what they think the reading is about - Ss discuss their ideas & try to predict the content of the reading T gets some general FB on their ideas, but don’t confirm or reject anything yet.

Initial Reading Task (4-6 minutes) • Skim reading for gist

T tells Ss to read the text quickly & see if their ideas were right. Ss read – then get them to check in pairs T takes FB & confirms answers.

Second reading task (6-8 minutes) • Scanning for specific information & deducting the meaning from context

-T put the number 36 on the w/b & ask Ss what it refers to in the text – get an answer Then T gives Ss ex 2 - & tells them to read the text again & find out what the numbers refer to. Ss check together - w/c FB T asks Ss to look at ex 3 & work in pairs/small groups to find the words in the text that match the meaning in ex 3. - Take w/c FB & deal with any questions

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • Speaking practice

T asks Ss what they thought of the man in the text. Then get the Ss to discuss in pairs the questions in ex 4 Take some general w/c FB If time, play backs-to-the-board with the vocabulary you pre-taught
