Description

In this lesson the students will practice combining vowel and consonant sounds within the context of paying for things.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary needed to pay for things in different places during a short trip

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to improve their fluency through freer speaking practise activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To show students a picture of Thiago and elicit from students what he is doing? - spend money Brainstorm ideas on the board of places where we spend money while on holiday/ a trip - museums -souvenir shops -restaurants/ cafe - hotel etc

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context of vocabulary used for paying for things through a listening activity

Ss listen to recording 2.3 - and complete the table. They are listening to find out where Thiago is, what he buys and how he pays- cash or card. Ss do initial FB in pairs, followed by quick WCFB

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will be given Ex 3a from the coursebook. They will decide which of the questions were asked by Thiago. Ak will be written on the board by T while Ss are on task. How much is that? Can I pay by Card? Could I have the bill? Do you take cards?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T uses the 1st three questions on the board from FB. T ask Ss what they notice about the questions.- connection lines T highlights that the vowels are connected to the consonants before them.( in green) Ss listen to the pronunciation tape for all 9 sentences. T highlights the word 'could' (in red) - elicit from Ss that it is a polite form of can. Can is used to ask a question. Could is used to make a request.

Semi controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • to give the learners a chance to practise TL in a controlled way

Ss will be given 2 semi- controlled activities to practice using the language we have focused on. Ss will check in pair by reading out the conversation.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In new pairs Ss take on A or B roles to use the TL
