Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn and practice about food and drink vocabulary. All of the Ss are adults from about 20-50 years old. Total number of Ss varies from 10-15. Most of Ss are fairly on the same level except a few who have a higher command of English. The ones with higher strength tend to help the weaker ones. It is a motivated team as a whole. Ss are cooperative, friendly and mature. They do their best to follow T instructions and a great rapport between Ss and instructors is established. Turkish is used occasionally amongst Ss for clarification but Ts try to return Ss attention back to speaking English.

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Food I Like in the context of Food and drink
  • To provide gist listening practice using vocabulary in the context of Food and Drink

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of vocabulary in the context of food and drink.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Start up with a short greeting and introduction. - Display the picture of foods/drinks. - Ask Ss about foods and drinks. - Start talking about food and drinks and engage Ss. - Display powerpoint pics of the vocabulary on Ex6a. - Model and drill one example from Ex6a and elicit the rest of the vocabulary on Ex6a. - a cup ( of coffee ) - a litre - ice cream - biscuits - a vegetarian - Drill the stress on the above-mentioned vocabulary to Ss. - Note that the stress on " ice cream " can be on either word.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Display picture/text about Zoe. - Pre-teach, elicit, drill the following vocabulary using pictures, gestures, examples. - Drink - Water - Rice - Pasta - Eat - Salad - Vegetables - Cheese Display picture/text about Ed. Pre-teach, elicit, drill the following vocabulary using pictures, gestures, examples. - Black Coffee - Chocolate - Milk - buiscuits - Meat - Fish - Fruit - Egg - Sanswiches Display picture/text about MEI. Pre-teach, elicit, drill the following vocabulary using pictures, gestures, examples. - Tea - Apples - Oranges Display picture/text about Ben. Pre-teach, elicit, drill the following vocabulary using pictures, gestures, examples. - Vegetarian - Fruit Juice

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Provide Ss with the HO and ask the to underline all the food words. Model an example. Group them in pairs. Monitor them. Check the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Display whole powerpoint picture of Zoe, Ed, MEI and BEN and ask simple gist questions about each, - What Zoe is doing? - What Ed is doing? - What MEI is doing? - What BEN is doing? Distribute the HO to Ss and ask them to complete Ex6b. Group Ss in pairs. Monitor Ss while doing the exercise. Go through the answers with WC.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Get Ss write six sentences about themselves using love, like, eat, drink, a lot of etc. - I like Pasta. Provide each S with a blank paper to write on. Ask Ss to stand up, walk around and ask other Ss if they like the same things.
