Description

In this lesson , using the context of risk and accidents, students will practise their speaking ands reading skills.

Materials

Abc Taking Risks

Main Aims

  • To provide practise reading for gist and specific details

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students the opportunity to speak in pairs about the idea of risk

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will look at the cartoon picture and guess what the woman is doing. They will then give other examples of risky behaviour.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students complete 3 part vocab matching to ensure they understand. Teacher will check vocab understaning. Students will take risk quiz individually and then score themselves. To generate interest and comparison, the teacher will show his own risk profile. Then Ss will discuss the quiz results in pairs. Finally feedback to the teacher about their scores.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

To ensure Ss are ready to read, they will do another simple vocab matching activity. Teacher will check understanding. In pairs, students use new vocabulary to predict the reading ideas. (no feedback yet). Teacher will given instructions, focused on reading for main ideas only. Ss will read individually.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

To check reading for main ideas, Ss will finish the stem sentences in pairs, discussing what they remember. Then they will be told to read for detail (slowly) to check their ideas. They then compare with a NEW partner to see if they got stem sentence answers correct. Quick feedback response to teacher.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs, Ss will discuss the ideas of hte article, using personal experiences to express an opinion about whether they are correct or not. This is freer practise.

Extension Activity (3-5 minutes) • To extend the freer practise

If there is extra time, the students can discuss what high-risks activities they would like to do.
