Description

The main aim of this TP is grammar and the sub-aim is listening and reading. In this lesson, students learn about to be ( plural, positive and negative ) and contraction forms of to be. The reading is for the exposure stage. Pre-teaching the context, drilling, eliciting, using visuals, clear gist tasks, presenting the meaning, pronunciation, forms of the TL are the focal points to follow on this TP.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of to be ( plural, positive, negative, contraction forms ) in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Two cities in the context of Travel
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Two cities in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduction - Conduct morning greeting. - Introduce myself. - Go through Ss names. - Based on the number of Ss, set up the group arrangement. Ex4a A quick pre-teach ( drill/elicit ) of the vocabulary on Ex4a 4a using pictures on Powerpoint with WC. - Hotel (n) - Room (n) - Restaurant (n) - Cafe (n) - Mosque (n) - Museum (n) - Hot (adj) - Expensive (adj) - Blue (adj) Point out that restaurant is two syllables.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Will start with the context - Pre-teach some vocabulary ( drill/elicit ) on Ex 4a & 4B & 10 on pg 22-23 - Use visuals to help - To give clear gist task on Ex 4c on pg22 - Present the meaning, pronunciation, form and practice on Ex6 to 10.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Ex5, will make sure the task is clear. - Will do an example with the WC.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- To clarify the " be " plural, single, positive, negative, full and contraction forms. Singular Positive, Full, Contraction Forms - I am - You are, You"re - He/She/It is, He"s, She"s, It's Plural Positive, Full, Contraction Forms - We are, We're - They are, They're Singular Negative, Contraction Forms - I am not - You are not - They are not, They're not - We are not, We're not

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

P1 Pre-reading activity Ex4c, Pg22 - Put up the powerpoint. - Draw Ss attention to the Pa picture. - Elicit questions about Alice, Mike and Istanbul. - Who is Alice? - Who is Mike? - Where is Alice? - Where is Mike? - Email from? ( Alice and Mike ) - Email to? ( Liz and Steve ) - Where are Alice and Mike? - Is it hot in Istanbul or cold? - People are or People is? P2 Ex5, pg23 Pair up Ss to do the Ex. Do a demo and ask Ss to do the rest of the Ex. Tick the true sentences and change the false adjectives to the right form. - It is very hot in Istanbul. - Istanbul is a beautiful city. - The people are friendly. - The restaurants are good. - Alice and Mike are in a big hotel. - The hotel rooms are nice. - The rooms are very big. P3 Ex6, pg23 Put up the powerpoint related to " be ". Teach Ss the " be " singular, plural, positive and negative, full and contraction forms. Elicit examples of to be. Explain to students that we do not contract are after a noun or name. - People are nice. - Mike and Alice are in Moscow. Do a demo of Ex6 Ask students to do Ex6 filling in the gaps. Go through the right answers with Ss. - We are in a small hotel. - You are from the UK. - They are very big. - We are not in the hotel now. - You aren't from Turkey. - They aren't very expensive. P4 Ex7, CD54, pg23 Ask Ss to listen to the recording Play the recording. Ss listen and practice the sentences in Ex6. P5 Ex8a, pg23 Arrange Ss in pairs. Do a demo of Ex8. Ask Ss to fill in the gaps with the right contractions. Monitor them. Go through the right answers with Ss. P6 Ex9, pg23 Ask Ss to listen to the CD1-55 and practice the sentences in Ex8a. P7 Ex10, pg23 put up the powerpoint. Elicit questions from Ss about the email. - Who are the people in the photo? Liz and Steve Demo an example of the grammar example on Ex10. Set Ss in pairs Ask them to do the Ex10. Monitor them. Go through the answers with them.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will provide Ss with the HO with blank spaces to be filled. - Set Ss in pairs. - Introduce Ss to the P. - Demo an example to Ss. - Ask Ss to complete the P ( to fill the blanks ). - Monitor them. - Go through the answers with S.
