Feelings Demo Lesson
A1 Elementary Kindergarten level

Description

In this demo lesson, STS will be introduced to new lexis and target structure 'I am... ' and 'How are you feeling? in the content of 'feelings'. The lesson will focus on settling and stirring activities through various speaking activities and games to keep the learners engaged and the lesson fun. A total physical response activity will allow STS to move whilst practicing the language and an arts and craft activity will allow the learners to get creative whilst learning. Through these activities they will practice using target language to describe how they and others are feeling.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the form of games and songs in the context of Feelings

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • Introduction to English demo lesson

Say 'Hello' to all STS using their first name. Introduce myself and the puppet to the STS Show STS a ball and practice the below; 'I am Carina' and 'I am ....' rolling the ball back and forth with the puppet. Practice ball exchange with STS, helping them to introduce themselves using 'I am ....'

Interactive video (2-3 minutes) • To engage learners in the topic and highlight target language

Show STS short video clip of Sesame Streets 'Feelings' song

Teach Target Language (3-5 minutes) • Teach target language and drill pronunciation

Using flashcards teach the following adjectives; happy, sad, angry and scared Flashcard game Using FC play the what's missing game.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To provide oral practice of the new lexis with a game and highlight target structure 'I am...' and 'How are you/am I feeling?'

Ask STS 'How am I feeling?' Mime the emotion using facial expressions and gestures. Elicit answer from STS. Using a grab bag. ask STS individually to draw a picture of an emotion. Without showing the image, STS mime the emotion. Ask the STS 'How is .... feeling?' and the class guesses the emotion.

Total Physical Response (gross motor skills) (5-7 minutes) • Practice new lexis in the form of movement and song

Practice movements to song and teach/review verbs. Ask STS to stand up. Ask STS to clap, stomp, ..... Learn new song. Sing 'If You're Happy and You Know It' using previously taught movements

Oral practice (2-3 minutes) • Provide learners with oral practice of the target structure and describing how thet are feeling

Using emotions sticks describe how you are feeling TS 'I am...' Ask STS to describe how they are feeling using emotion sticks. Ask 'How are you feeling?' Elicit/ assist learners to say 'I am....'

Arts and Craft (12-15 minutes) • Provide a creative outlet in the context of feelings and to encourage learners to take pride in their work

STS create emotion mood sticks/paper plates and personalise each one using wool, glitter, features etc....

Optional - Reading time (possible activity for circle time post lesson) • To focus on STS listening skills

Read 'The Way I Feel' by Janan Cain During circle time read the relevant emotion pages to learners (happy, sad, angry, scared). When the STS hear a specific feeling prompt them to stand up and act it out.
