Description

In this lesson, context remains the same (i.e. animals), but topic changes to "working animals". The lesson will start with a discussion, e.g. what guide dogs do, and how they help people. Then, they will listen an interview with a trainer of guide dogs for the blind. With the help of the listening, students will be taught be/get used to.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of be/get used to in the context of animals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and fluency listening practice using a text about working animals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (2-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic and engage students

Students will see two pictures on the board. Pictures will be about guide dogs. Then, Ss will be asked to think about "How do the dogs help the men in the photos?" and "In what other ways do dogs help people?". In groups, they will discuss these questions, and then they will be asked to give feedback.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening text and make it understandable

Ss will try to elicit the meanings of the words from T questions and examples on the slides. There are some difficult words and some idioms. They may know couple of them, but they are not expected to know all the words.

Gist Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

Ss will listen an interview with a trainer of guide dogs for blind people. Before they listen, they will read the quesitons written on exercise 2. Then, they will listen to get an overall idea about the interview, and find out which questions have an answer in the text.

Detailed Listening (4-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

Ss will listen the interview again. This time, they will try to find the answers to the questions in the second exercise. They need to listen carefully to be able to find the answers.

Focus on Language (8-10 minutes) • To teach be/get used to

Ss will work on grammar ex. 1. Work in pairs and match the exract from the interview with the questions. Then, Ss will be handed be/get used to handout to check their answers. Their understanding will be checked with some CCQs. For Q1: In the past, did the woman in the interview work as a postwoman? Is she still a postwoman? For Q2: Are the blind people accustomed to walking around with white sticks? Is it unusual to use white sticks, for them? Are they familiar with white sticks? For Q3: Are the dogs familiar with their owners' daily routine? Will they be familiar with their owners' daily routine? After CCQs, T will drill the pronunciation of be/get used to. Finally, Ss will be given the form of be/get used to as a handout.
