Materials

Main Aims

  • To elicit and clarify the use of for and since with the present perfect and provide students with an opportunity to practise in a controlled and freeer way

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to speak about their own personal experiences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write two model sentences from the reading on the board and use the names. ( miss out for and since) Elicit from the students where the sentences are from. elicit answers to the gaps

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To ensure that students understand the meaning, form and pronunciation of the model sentences.

To make sure students understand the meaning: Ask CCQ's and write answers under each model sentence. (red) "when did Marco start working at CSP?" "Does Marco work there now?" "when did Lauren start working at CSP?" "Does Lauren work there now?" To make sure students understand the Form: Ask the students why we use since in the first sentence and circle it. (green) Draw a table with since on the left side and write 2008. (green) Ask the students why we use for in the second sentence and circle it. (green) Put for on the right side of the table and write three months. (green) Tell students to think of more examples to complete the table in pairs. WCF on the board ( in green) To make sure students understand the pronunciation: Ask the students what I've means and write it above ( in black) Repeat sentence - drill Use CCQ's - "do we say I HAVE worked here since 2008?" Sound the second model sentence. Show that for becomes a [f] sound that is connected with the number

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • to give the learners a chance to practise the TL in a controlled way

Show the students practice 1. Ask the students to add for or since to 5 sentences individually. ICQ - "are we working in pairs?" - "no" Give the HO, give students 3-4 mins. Check in pairs. WCF - Select students to read the completed sentences

Semi- Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • to give the learners a chance to practise both writing and speaking the TL in a personal way.

I've worked.. I've lived... elicit more answers from students Hold up the blue piece of paper. Tell the students that they will write 3 sentences about themselves. They shouldn't show anyone and they shouldn't write their name. ICQ's - " do we write our name on the paper?" "do we work together?" "do we keep it a secret?" Give 3 min max time limit. Walk around and collect finished papers. Tell students they will get a new paper, they should look at the paper and guess who it is, find that person and ask questions to see if they were right. Ask follow up q's ICQ's - "Do we show our papers and say " is this yours?"" - no

Freer practice (10-12 minutes) • To give the students a chance to use the TL more freely

Show the students the worksheet. Demo ICQ's - "Do we sit in our chair and ask Q's?" - no - "Do we walk around?" - yes WCF

If- time activity (5-6 minutes) • consolidate practise

Show Ss a final HO from the workbook with both missing verb and since or for
