If Clause, First Conditional

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the first conditional through situational presentation based on checking meaning, form and pronunciation. The lesson starts with getting to know you activities. (Invisible ball- ball memory name game) This is followed by presentation about the first conditional. Finally there is some controlled practice through sentence reformulation and free practice via a final role- play speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the first conditional in the context of weather conditions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of first conditional

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts the class with greeting and play invisible ball game. Teacher gets students to stand in a circle. Students say their name then throws the ball. Repeat this a few times. The teacher goes for monitoring and students are talking with their peers.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher asks them to read the paragraph then answer the question. They will read the paragraph individually then discuss with a partner. Instruction: Are you going to read the paragraph alone or not? (Alone) Are you going to discuss a partner? (Yes)

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher shows the marker sentence "If I eat too much, I will get fat." via OHP then highlights the adverb of "If".

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher tries to eliciting with the following questions: "Where is the If Clause?" (quickly) "How many sentences are there?" (Two) "Where is the present simple sentences? (After "If") Teacher will clarify some if clause form of the first conditional.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete the blanks in the statements about the first conditional.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher hands out papers, and introduces the idea of "If Clause, First Conditional". Asks students to match the if clause sentences.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher will reflect the questions from OHP and ask students to answer the questions individually. To make students talk to somebody in the class, teacher will divide students into two groups which are the same size. Then students form two concentric circles. When teacher play the music, the inner circle moves clockwise, the outer circle anti-clockwise. When the music stops, students start to talk each other. Instructions: Look at the questions first then stand up and make inner and outer circle. When the music starts, the inner circle moves clockwise, the outer circle anti-clockwise. When the music stops, please share your answers with your partner.
