Teaching vocabulary related to sports
Intermediate, grade 7 level

Description

In this lesson students learn some necessary vocabulary related to sports. It starts with a warm up activity through some pictures. Students will guess and name as many sports as they can by looking at pictures in groups. Then some questions will be given to them to be discussed in groups and later elicited by the teacher. New vocabulary will be taught as a matching exercise in groups. The pronunciation will be practiced through a game. New vocabulary can be practiced by talking about sport as a freer activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a sport interest and activities in the context of soccer golf basket ball....-action words and practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a how to pronounce these words in the context of sport words phrases

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will have both warm up and leading part here In this stage I will start with some photos related to the sport activities and ask them to name as many sports as they can . Then they will answer some prepared questions in their groups that will be elicited later by the teacher.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Some pictures will be given to the students to match with the new words as flash cards.The teacher will check and later provide the correct matches. After they learn the meaning, the pronunciation will be practiced through number games.

Controlled Practice (9-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

A paragraph is given to the students to fill in the blanks with the new words. The answers will be checked first in groups then the whole class.

Free Practice (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

All the vocabulary will be practiced through Taboo game
