Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of The past simple,past progressive, and past perfect in the context of the power of nature

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about the power of nature in the context of of listening to 2 people talk about their experiences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Elicit the power of nature topic by partially filling in the words on the board (_ _ E/ _ _ W _ R/ _ _ / _ A_ _ _ E hand out vocab from 1a and show pictures on the board to elicit responses from students about what the picture is of. post exercise 1b on the w/b and ask students to answer the question.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

post ex 2 a on the W/B have students listen preferably once, but if need be a 2nd time, peer check, whole class feed back complete ex 3 listen 1 or 2 times, peer check whole class feed back

Highlighting (3-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

give students exercise 4b and have students complete it, peer check, whole class feed back

Clarification (8-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

present the grammar chart and and highlight some stress points, and patterns, and do some drilling with students.

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

students complete ex 5 alone and then students will switch papers and check each others work and discuss what they think are the correct answers. give answer key

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

students complete gap fill and peer check and then give an answer key for whole class feed back

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

give students the sentence unscramble in groups and have each group post the answers on the board, first group finished wins! whole class feed back and mark grammar patterns in the sentences on the W/B.
