Teaching Practice 4
B1 level

Description

In this lesson Ss will be introduced to present perfect with time expressions in the context of expressing their achievements. Ss will be given the context through a listening record in which there's an interview and the speakers talk about their achievements using the necessary grammar focus. At the end of the lesson, they will be provided with a semi-controlled speaking exercise in which they have to speak to their pairs about their achievements.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present perfect tense and time expressions in the context of achievements

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a contextualised text about achievements.
  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of achievements

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of achievements

Show a picture of the Europa League champion Manchester United celebrating their triumph. Get Ss into pairs and ask them the following questions for them to discuss. CCQ: "Can you guess what's happening in the picture?" Focus on the time of the triumph. CCQ:" When did they win the cup?" "What does this achievement mean to them?" "Do you think they have been working so hard to win the cup?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To practice listening for the gist and contextualise the target language

Project the pictures in exercise 1. Get Ss into pairs Ask Ss to guess their achievements from the pictures. Give Ss a HO with the questions from exercise 2. Tell them to read the questions before listening to the recording 1.25. Play the recording 1.25. Ss peer-check their answers. Give a HO with the script of the recording to check their answers in pairs.

Highlighting target language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that the learners are focused on it

Give Ss the HO with exercise 4 and project it on the WB also. Get Ss into pairs. Tell Ss to match the sentences from the listening with their functions a or b. Have Ss who finish earlier to come to WB and write the answer.

Clarifying target language (10-12 minutes) • To cover meaning, form and pronunciation

Get Ss into pairs. Give Ss a HO with exercise 5. Tell them to match the sentences to categories a-e. Project the same exercise on the WB. As you go along the sentences with the whole class ask CCQs: " Is this a finished action or situation?". Highlight the form: auxiliary+ time expression+ past participle for always, never, just and already (already can also go at the end of the sentence) for+ period of time/ since+ point in time (draw a timeline for these) At the end of the sentence: yet and recently (recently can also go in the mid position for positive sentences) Show the stress in some sentences and drill.

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with an exercise focused on using the language accurately

Get Ss into pairs. Tell them "I've wanted to write." Ask them what is missing in the sentence. Give them a HO with the exercise 6. Instruct them that they are to add the time expressions to the correct position in the sentence with their pairs. Project the key on the WB for them to check their answers.

Semi-controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide spoken practice and use the language productively

Tell Ss to ask a question to you from exercise 6 to demonstrate the activity. Instruct the Ss that they are to ask the questions to one another. Tell all Ss to stand up and get them into mingled speaking in which they ask one another the questions in exercise 6. ICQs: " Which questions will you ask?" Exercise 6. Walk round and monitor the use of present perfect and the adverbs.

Error correction (2-3 minutes) • To provide delayed feedback

Write some mistakes the Ss made during the speaking activity on WB. Ask if there is something wrong with them and what is wrong. Correct the sentences.
