Description

In this lesson, Ss will first focus on vocabulary items (verb-noun collocations) regarding free time activities. Ss will have a chance to listen for gist and specific information through a listening text about Paul, who is away from home. Ss will also practise the verb-noun collocations when talking about their own recreational activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information through a listening text about free-time activities in the context of away from home

  • To provide practice of free time lexis, esp. verb-noun collocations, in the context of away from home

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss what Turkish people generally do in their free time. (e.g. What kind of activities? Do they do sports a lot? Do they read a lot? What do men do a lot? What do women do?) w/c involvement.

Vocabulary activity (4-6 minutes) • To activate schemata regarding target vocabulary

Have Ss pay attention to wb - pictures of free time activities and strips of paper with vocabulary items. Ss will match pictures with correct verb-noun collocations on wb. Ss work in pairs at wb in turns. w/c FB. Provide answer key to Ss. Drill names of some free time activities, esp. "go skiing" and "listen". CCQ: Do we say /ˈskiː.ɪŋ/ or "skiing" (with strong /g/ at the end)? /ˈskiː.ɪŋ/ Do we say /ˈlɪs.ən/ or "listen" (with strong /t/ in middle)? /ˈlɪs.ən/ Do we say "listen music" or "listen TO music"? listen TO music

Pre-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss focus on the coloured photo (of Paul) on wb (projector) Ask Ss to think about this photo in pairs. "Think about: where do you think this is? Who is the man? Who are Alison and Erin?" ICQs: Are we writing or talking about the photo? Talking Do we know anything about this man? No. So we are only guessing. Monitor Ss as they discuss. w/c FB. Have a few opinions about the photo. Ask students how they know that Alison (or Erin) is the daughter. Explain to Ss that they are going to listen to Alison talking to Vicky about Paul. Before distributing HO, chest HO. Instructions: "There are 4 sentences here. Read them first. And choose the correct answer while you are listening. The first one has been answered." ICQs: Are we writing or choosing the correct answer? Choosing Are we reading the sentences before of after listening? Before Play audio file 4.1

Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task

Ss listen to audio file 4.1 (They listen to it again if necessary) Ss choose correct answer in the 4 sentences on HO. Ss work in pairs to check answers. Write answer key on wb so that Ss can check their answers. Ask bonus question: "In Paul's job, is the money good or bad?"

Pre-Listening #2 (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Have Ss work in pairs to talk about 4 free time activities that Paul may do (from the vocabulary activity at the beginning of the lesson). "You can take some notes" Monitor Ss as they work in pairs. Tell Ss that they are going to listen to the remainder of the conversation. ICQs: How many activities do we want? Four. Who is doing these activities? Paul. Play audio file 4.2

Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Ss listen to audio file 4.2 and try to take notes about the four activities that Paul does. If necessary, play file once more. Ss peer check and compare answers at the end of listening. W/C FB. Then provide tapescript as answer key.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to expand on what they have learned

Ss work in pairs to ask each other questions about free time activities. Provide example: "Do you watch sport on TV? Yes, I do / No, I don't" Ss should ask 1 extra questions after yes/no question. Example: "What do you watch?" Monitor Ss and check for errors. If time: Ss work in pairs to practise verb-noun collocations. S1 says: "photos", S2 provides verb, e.g. "take photos"
